The Exiles’ Account
Cuba, 1961. After invasion and sabotage, Mariela follows a trail from attacked clinics and warehouses to a captive whose account may be true, coerced, or both. Nurses, fishers, and municipal workers decide what evidence leaves the island—and what help they will accept.
Everyone wants the captive’s story to settle an argument. Mariela suspects it will make the argument harder. She follows the damage outward through workplaces and neighborhoods, asking who benefits when testimony becomes propaganda and who still has to live beside the wreckage.
