The Republic in the Mountains

By Tristin Hassell

Puerto Rico, 1950. Police turn speeches and employment cards into evidence. Printers and drivers carry people and testimony into the mountains while families argue over who should leave, who should stay, and whether the next delivery will save anyone or expose them.

The uprising depends on ordinary routes: a truck that still runs, a press that can be moved, a house whose neighbors know when not to look. As arrests close those routes, the people using them must decide which work can continue and who has already paid too much.
