The Coup Engine

By Tristin Hassell

Guatemala, 1954. As a U.S.-backed coup advances, rail crews, clinic workers, and market organizers struggle to keep people and records moving. La Común can carry a message or guard a crossing, but Elena must answer to the workers who will still be there after the soldiers arrive.

The coup travels by rumor, radio, payroll, and fear before its soldiers reach the capital. Elena can see the machinery starting to turn. Stopping any part of it means trusting people with different risks, different loyalties, and no promise that courage will be enough.
