The Daily Margin Privacy Policy

This policy covers The Daily Margin for iPhone and iPad, version 1.1 and later.

Effective and last updated October 9, 2026.

In short

  • No Daily Margin server, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. The developer receives none of your data.
  • Saved stories, priorities and your offline pack stay on your device. Searches, ZIP codes, addresses and letters are not saved.
  • Each request goes directly from your device to the public source that answers it, and that source sees an ordinary request.
  • Nothing is sent on your behalf. You send every letter yourself.

Who is responsible

What stays on your device

Your saved stories, priority lists, reading view, the last news refresh and any Top 25 pack you download are stored only on your device, in the app’s private storage. Search questions, Local Desk areas, the address you type in the Civic Desk and your letter drafts are kept only while the app is open and are not saved. Deleting the app deletes everything.

News feeds and background refresh

The app downloads the public RSS or WordPress feeds of its listed publishers. When iOS allows it, it refreshes the same feeds in the background so headlines are ready when you open the app. Articles open in Safari inside the app, where each publisher’s own privacy policy applies, and from where you can browse the web. Links have common tracking parameters removed.

Ask the Margin

Your question stays on your device. The app matches it against headlines it has already downloaded from its listed publishers and shows the ones that fit, with links. Nothing is sent. If you want to look further, a button opens a web search in Safari, where that search engine’s own privacy policy applies. Evidence only is the default. On supported devices you can choose a short summary; the question and headlines stay on your device for that step too.

Local Desk and location

The app never asks for your location and never tracks it. You type a five-digit ZIP code. Zippopotam.us resolves it, and the ZIP code’s approximate center, rounded to about 1 km, goes to the National Weather Service, the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGERweb service and OpenStreetMap (through the Overpass service). Local news is matched on your device against downloaded headlines; the town name is not sent anywhere. The license plate reader section shows a count, never individual camera locations.

Civic Desk and your address

The street address you type goes only to the official U.S. Census Bureau geocoder to find your districts. Only your state and district numbers go to CIV.IQ to look up the public roster of officials. Letters are drafted on your device and are never sent automatically: you choose to copy, share, email or paste them yourself. The optional on-device edit uses your device’s writing tools and never sees your greeting, location or signature. This product uses the Census Bureau public data but is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau.

App Store privacy label

Its App Store label lists Coarse Location (your typed ZIP code and its center rounded to about 1 km) and Physical Address (sent only to the Census Bureau). Both are used only to answer your request, are not linked to you, and are never used for tracking. Search questions stay on your device, so they are not on the label. None of this reaches us.

Children

The Daily Margin is a news app for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Messages you send us

If you write to us through the contact form or by email, we receive your name, email address and message and use them only to reply and to improve the app. The website privacy policy explains how long we keep these messages. Please leave passwords, access keys and other people’s private records out of your message.

Your requests

Information the app keeps on your own device or computer can be viewed, exported and deleted there. Information held by a service you connect is controlled by them, as described above. To ask about information you have sent us, or to have it deleted, contact us as above. We respond within 30 days. California residents have these rights under California law, and we extend them to everyone.

Changes to this policy

If a future version changes what the app stores or sends, we will update this page before that version is released and change the date above.
